PNG bit depth checker for height and depth maps

Before a file reaches LightBurn, a slicer or CAM, check what is actually stored. Read an existing PNG without reducing it through a browser canvas or uploading it to a server.

Check the PNG you actually have

Read the file's bit depth and stored grayscale values locally. No upload, account or credits. The original file is not changed.

PNG only · up to 16 MiB and 4,194,304 pixels · non-interlaced 8/16-bit grayscale or RGB, with optional alpha. Indexed and animated PNGs are not supported.

A 16-bit label describes storage capacity. Many stored values do not prove recovered detail, and a 257-step pattern does not prove an 8-bit origin. This checks image data, not source provenance, LightBurn import or manufacturing success. Ancillary metadata is not validated.

Check storage and values separately

The header tells you whether each sample uses 8 or 16 bits. The decoded image tells you how many different gray values are present and which part of the range is used. A 16-bit container can store values from 0 to 65,535, but it may contain far fewer distinct values. This checker reads the original integer samples without applying display gamma, resizing or converting colors into brightness.

Start with the published compatibility sample. It has 16-bit grayscale storage and 255 different values, all multiples of 257. That agrees with its documented 8-bit preview source. Now choose your own file and compare the measured facts. Your file name and image remain in the browser; the downloadable JSON contains statistics and a SHA-256 fingerprint, not the image.

A histogram is evidence, not a provenance certificate

A common 8-to-16-bit expansion multiplies samples by 257. Seeing that pattern is useful, but a deliberately stepped original could have the same values. Interpolation or noise can also create thousands of different values without recovering any missing scene detail. Neither a high count nor a low count settles whether an AI result is accurate.

For a production decision, retain the source image, raw depth field and export settings alongside the report. A narrow gray range may need remapping; a flat background may be intentional. Inspect subject boundaries visually before adjusting contrast. For RGB files with unequal channels, this tool reports format facts but omits gray-value statistics instead of inventing a height field from color.

Take the checked file through the receiving tool

File validation is one checkpoint. A receiving application can resize or quantize the image, reverse the height direction or interpret transparency differently. Import the unchanged file, verify the application's preview and test a small piece with your actual material. LightBurn's 3D Sliced workflow is specific to supported Galvo devices; a valid PNG alone does not make that mode available on other equipment.

This utility accepts static, non-interlaced grayscale or RGB PNGs at 8 or 16 bits per channel, optionally with alpha. Indexed images, animation and interlacing need a compatible export copy; keep the original. The 16 MiB and 4,194,304-pixel limits protect browser memory. Image data and critical image checks are inspected; ancillary metadata and physical outcomes are outside the report.

Common questions

Does a 16-bit PNG prove extra detail?

No. The label reports sample capacity. Check actual values, source provenance and the receiving workflow before making a precision claim.

Will my file be uploaded or changed?

No. A web worker reads your local PNG. The sample button downloads a public example; the report download contains measured statistics, not your image.

Can it verify EXR, JPEG or TIFF?

No. This checker accepts the stated PNG formats only. Converting another format first changes what file is being measured.

A format reference is not certification of this tool or a physical result.
